As a Rock Creek Sports Club member, we’re guessing you’re probably already well aware of the many benefits of physical activity — one of those being the chance to live a longer, healthier life.

Now, researchers from from Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, are saying they have a better idea, of just how many years of life are gained by being physically active at different levels, among ALL individuals, age, sex, and even body mass index (BMI.)

After analyzing data from more than 650,000 subjects and following subjects for an average of ten years —plus, analyzing over 82,000 deaths —researchers found:

Rock Creek Member Completes Tough Mudder

For those of you unfamiliar with Tough Mudder events, they are no joke. These events are “hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie.”

So you can imagine how proud we are of Rock Creek Sports Member and college student Lily Kehoe who recently completed the Mid-Atlantic Tough Mudder held in Frederick, MD!

Exercise May Reduce Risks for Breast Cancer

Ladies, when you make an effort to come into to Rock Creek Sports Club, whether it’s to workout on your own, Spin, or take a yoga class, you’re also making your health a priority and reducing your risk for breast cancer.

A new study published CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, found that women can reduce their breast cancer risk by exercising and maintaining their weight.

First, let’s talk about what Metabolic Conditioning means. (New class descriptions below.)

During the day, when you’re going about your daily routine, your body is burning calories as it performs its normal functions, this is called your “Basal Metabolic Rate.” Of course, when you’re working out, your body increases your metabolic rate in order to keep up with the increased activity, because calories equal energy.

Now, if you want to increase your metabolic rate both during and after your workout, you should check out Metabolic Training!

Meet the Member: Pulitzer-Winning Journalist David Wood

You may have seen Rock Creek Sports Club member David Wood around the gym. He, like many other members here, comes in as often as possible to build strength and endurance to keep up with a favorite hobby — in David’s case, Alpine Climbing.

What you may not know about David though, was his recent impact on journalism history. This past April, David was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in National Reporting for his series “Beyond the Battlefield” for the Huffington Post. This was a first for both David, and for the seven-year old web-based newspaper.

Spicy Turkey Burgers

TurkeyBurgerJust in time for all those July 4th barbecues, we wanted to share this healthy spicy turkey burger recipe! Avoiding carbs? Just wrap them up in lettuce instead of a bun!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound 93%-lean ground turkey
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground chipotle pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon canola oil

Prep:

Mix the ground turkey with everything bu the oil in a bowl. Make into 4 patties. Brush with oil and grill them up!

Nutrition: 171.2 Calories, 9.1 g of Fat, 22 g of Protein
